Designing Military Insignia

United States Space Force

In my role as Illustrator at the Institute of Heraldry, Department of the Army, I had the unique task of designing historically significant items for the United States Space Force (USSF). Doing a deep dive into the history of the Air Force, I started with historical USAF symbols and translated them into modern graphics that better fit the contemporary image of the Space Force. Projects for USSF included the offical flag and staff badge, as well as crucial elements of the uniform.

The black background refers to the vast recesses of outer space. The Delta Wing evokes historic ties to the earliest days of the U.S. Air Force space community, and symbolizes change and innovation. It also represents all variations of space vehicles that support our National Defense Strategy and National Security Space Strategy. The Globe represents the terrestrial home of the U.S. Space Force and its support to the joint warfighters. The Elliptical Orbit signifies defense and protection from all adversaries and threats emanating from the space domain. It also represents ongoing interagency cooperation and allied partnerships. The white Polaris symbolizes the guiding light of security and alludes to a constant presence and vigilance in space now and in the future.  Two clusters of small stars represent the space assets developed, maintained, and operated by the U.S. Space Force. The three larger stars symbolize the Organize, Train, and Equip functions of the Space Force.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Badge & Logo

In 2021, I was awarded the Joint Civillian Service Achievement Award for meritorious achievement as a Heraldic Artist in re-designing the iconic Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official seal, badge, logo, and decorations to incorporate a fifth sword to symbolize the addition of the Space Force into the JCS.
